"The national reduction targets of phosphorus and nitrogen have already been set by HELCOM at last year's meeting in Krakow, Poland. Now its time to agree on how to move forward and implement the Baltic Sea Action Plan. We need to set up a list of priorities, which enable us to focus on the most cost efficient investments reducing the releases of nutrients into the Baltic Sea", said Karl-Johan Lehtinen, Senior Manager at NEFCO.
Lehtinen participated in the event as one of several key note speakers. Lehtinen suggested that priority is given to the waste water treatment in Kaliningrad and St Petersburg. Moreover, agricultural projects dealing with manure from poultry and pig farms in Russia, Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic countries should also be prioritized since the unit abatement cost per reduced ton of phosphorus is significantly lower in such projects as compared to other investments.
The German research institute Institut für Ostseeforschung Warnemünde and the retired teacher Bertil Sundström from Kökar received this year's Baltic Sea prizes, which were announced at the seminar. The prize has been granted by Östersjöfonden since 1991 when the foundation was established by entrepeneur Anders Wiklöf. Östersjöfonden is an environmental foundation based in Mariehamn at the Åland isles.
