NEFCO Carbon Fund adds another Danish investor

The Nordic Environment Finance Corporation's NEFCO Carbon Fund (NeCF), a Public Private Partnership, announces a new investor into the Fund. 

Industrialiseringsfonden for Udviklingslandene (IFU) or the Industrialisation Fund for Developing Countries, offers risk capital and advice to businesses investing in developing countries. IFU is an independent, self-governing fund established by the Danish state to assist Danish investments in developing countries and manager for IØ (Investeringsfonden for Østlandene) investing in Central and Eastern Europe. IFU will invest €5 million.

Body: 

The fund's target capitalisation is €50 million, of which €42 million has now been pledged. The existing investors are DONG Energy, the Danish Energy Authority and NEFCO itself. The fund may close at, below or above this level, and is by invitation only. The initial round of subscriptions were invited until June 30th 2008, but the NeCF remain open to subscriptions and currently is in discussions with other potential investors.

    The Norwegian Government, through the Ministry of Finance will invest €30 million, or around 283 million Norwegian kroner in the Nefco Carbon Fund (NeCF). The Ministry of Finance is authorized by the Storting (the Norwegian Parliament) to contract delivery of carbon credits (Certified Emission Reductions, CER, and Emission Reduction Units, ERU) from the Clean Development Mechanism, CDM, and Joint Implementation, JI. The combined budget appropriation for 2008 is 4.1 billion Norwegian kroner.

    Five European multilateral financing institutions, including NEFCO, have agreed to a common approach to environmental management associated with the financing of projects. The financial institutions CEB, EBRD, EIB, NIB and NEFCO are today launching a joint sourcebook which outlines the environmental legislation, including principles and standards, adopted by the five multilateral financial institutions.

    NEFCO is to invest 5 million euros to upgrade waste water treatment plants in Latvia, the corporation announced on Thursday. This bridge-financing is intended to speed up the modernisation of waste water treatment plants in small, rural Latvian municipalities.

    The investment is expected to reduce the release of phosphorus by some 5-10 tonnes per year, which is in line with the Baltic Sea Action Plan approved by HELCOM last year.

    NEFCO's Special Adviser Husamuddin Ahmadzai is to serve as chair of the executive committee of the multilateral fund of the Montreal Protocol commencing 1 January 2009. The fund is dedicated to reversing the deterioration of the earth's ozone layer.

The Commission’s Chairman, Igor Maydanov, suggests that the heads of state of the member countries should be involved in decisions that affect the Baltic Sea Action Plan.

    The Nordic Environment Finance Corporation announced on Wednesday that its Carbon Fund (NeCF) has signed Agreements to procure emission reductions from a wind energy project in Jiangsu province, and a small hydro project in southwest China. The projects will be implemented under the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). These are NEFCO's first projects in China.
