NEFCO has granted a loan for upgrading the fleet of vehicles and machinery owned by the private company Novgorod Spetzautokhoziastvo, which is responsible for cleaning and removing solid waste for the city of Novgorod.

The overall aim of the project is to replace existing, outdated machinery with modern and environmentally friendly street cleaning vehicles. The loan, valued at EUR 290,700, will be disbursed from NEFCO’s facility for cleaner production.

The Novgorod project is expected to reduce harmful yearly emissions of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and organic carbon by almost 100 tonnes for each substance. The procurement of new, fuel efficient vehicles will also reduce fuel consumption by approximately 95,000 litres per year, and help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by some 215 tonnes per year. The payback period for the loan is 3.8 years.

“This is the second loan targeted for emission reduction measures in the transports sector in Russia, which we have approved because there is a demand for modernizing the fleets of machines in many Russian cities. We hope that this funding can stimulate similar upgrades in other areas,” says NEFCO’s Investment Manager, Maria Maliniemi.

Vitaly Artyushchenko, an investment adviser and NEFCO’s representative in Russia, is equally upbeat about the potential of the project;

 ”Since 2002, NEFCO has, through various mechanisms, supported several investments aimed at improving the solid waste management operations in Russia. We are delighted that this cooperation has also extended to the street cleaning sector, and hope that this specific project will help to improve the quality of street cleaning services and also reduce the emissions of harmful wastes during transportation in Russia’s oldest city, which has just celebrated its 1150th anniversary”, he says.

The city of Novgorod, which is located in north western Russia, has some 220,000 inhabitants.

    For the past five years, NEFCO has been an active participant in the project-based segment of the carbon markets which have mobilised significant new investments for climate change mitigation.

    The Baltic Sea Region Testing Ground Facility (TGF), a pioneering regional carbon fund managed by NEFCO, has committed over 35 million EUR of public and private capital to reward greenhouse gas emission reductions achieved by energy sector and other projects in the Baltic Sea Region through the Kyoto Protocol’s Joint Implementation (JI) mechanism.

    The Carbon Finance and Funds (CFF) operations of NEFCO expanded in both volume and scope in 2009, against a backdrop of difficult economic conditions globally and political uncertainty regarding international climate policy.

    The NEFCO Carbon Fund (NeCF), now with financial resources exceeding 100 million euro, has been active in sustainable energy investments in Asia and Africa. NEFCO's pioneering Baltic Sea Region Testing Ground Facility (TGF), a 35-million-euro regional carbon finance facility, concluded its active procurement and entered fund administration phase in 2009.

    Jūrmala’s deserted streets are not at their most charming during winter. But in summer, this celebrated resort is transformed into something of Latvia’s own Riviera, its fine, sandy shoreline and shallow waters inviting beachgoers in for a swim. With its 55,000 inhabitants and wooden houses, the city is also a popular destination for those living in nearby Riga. The local train to Jūrmala only takes around 30 minutes.

    NEFCO has approved a loan for cleaner production at the Yarychiv Biscuit Factory. The factory, which is situated near Lviv in western Ukraine, accounts for 2.1 per cent of the country’s total biscuit production.

    The loan, which amounts to EUR 350,000, has been disbursed from NEFCO’s facility for cleaner production. The purpose of the loan is to replace the existing sugar biscuit production line, which uses 105 gas burners, with more energy efficient and environmentally sound equipment.
