For region-specific projects
Projects related to the Baltic Sea
The reduction of pollutants affecting the Baltic Sea is a key priority for NEFCO. Through our various instruments, we finance both public and private sector projects related to agriculture, wastewater treatment, and hazardous waste within the Baltic Sea catchment area.
Projects by the Arctic Council working groups
Through the Arctic Council Project Support Instrument (PSI) NEFCO finances activities that contribute to energy efficiency, sustainable use of resources, pollution mitigation and a positive impact on communities in the Arctic region. These may include, among others, project identification and concept development, feasibility studies, environmental impact assessments, and specific measures in the implementation phase of demonstration projects.
Sustainability in the Barents region
In 2003, NEFCO and the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) mapped out 42 environmental so-called ‘hot spots’, in the Barents Region, environmental problem areas which require specific measures of protection and action to be taken. The Barents Hot Spots Facility (BHSF) finances technical assistance to address these. The support is typically related to the financing of key pre-feasibility and feasibility studies.
Certified emission reduction (CER) projects and carbon credits
NEFCO is and has been involved in a number of activities specifically focused on climate change mitigation, including carbon and climate finance as well as adaptation and sustainable development.
